Life as we know it

#Biology #Chemistry #Ecology #Math

This hands-on course will give participants the opportunity to dive deeper into topics they have probably encountered before. Throughout the year will explore the unity and diversity of life, biochemical processes, heredity & genes, reproduction & development, evolution, and ecology. Our emphasis will be on understanding the processes and mechanisms that allow life to thrive so that we can understand the impact of our choices.

in Nyack, NY. $240 per 6 classes includes all materials.

Tuesdays & Wednesdays 10 - 11:30 am (Ages 13+)

Ongoing, starting September 14.

Lessons will incorporate laboratory and scientific inquiry skills. This course can satisfy the requirement for 1200 lab minutes, for those interested in taking the NY Regents Living Environment exam.

In her entire school career (my daughter is 14), she has never experienced as enriching and exciting science class. Maskit’s classes are entirely project-based and hands-on. Each learning arc focused on a different theme, for example, Life of a Cell, and approached the theme from many angles. Students made leaf-packs in streams, separated hydrogen and oxygen from water, learned about sugars and decomposition in fruit, made lung models out of plastic bottles, straws and balloons....and countless other activities. There is not an emphasis on homework, but on gaining a deep understanding of the systems and processes at play. Thanks Maskit, I wish every school science program were as magical as yours. We will definitely be enrolling again in the Fall!

water, Cells,
and the Chemistry of Life

#Biology #Chemistry #Physics #Math

This 10-week program begins with an investigation of the unique properties of water that allow it to support life. Students are introduced to essential topics such as molecules, the atomic model, the pH scale, density, and reactivity. These establish a basis for an exploration of the structures and processes within cells that allow them to maintain a healthy internal environment. We will use a microscope to observe cells and see how they react to different environments, learn about structures within the cell, and create experiments to measure and study rates of reactions. Students will gain an understanding of concepts such as diffusion and osmosis, catalysts and enzymes, metabolic pathways, as well as applied math and graphing.

Explorations in Science & Math

#hands-on #Biology #Chemistry #Physics #Ecology #Math

The best way to learn science and math is through experience, and nature provides plenty of learning opportunities. We will explore our environment, investigate what’s there, how it works, and how we can learn more about it. We will keep track of our learning by recording observations, thoughts, and questions in the form of notes, sketches, or numbers. The focus will be on hands-on learning to encourage creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and scientific concepts.
